Pillar Palatal Implant System
Medical Snoring Treatment
The surgical Pillar Palatal Implant System is a relatively new snoring treatment.
The procedure - carried out by qualified medical experts - involves inserting small
plastic rods into the soft palate. The rods are each 3/4" long and are injected under
local anaesthetic. Most patients receive three such implants.
How Does It Work?
The idea behind the treatment is to stiffen the soft tissue of the palate. This is
intended to prevent the roof of the mouth fluttering during sleep and causing snoring.
Does It Work?
According to the January 2005 edition of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, the
procedure can be an effective snoring cure for some people.
The research was carried out
by Dr. Joachim T. Maurer and colleagues from University Hospital Mannheim, Germany.
Studies of 15 patients treated with the Pillar Palatal Implant System showed a significant
decrease in snoring after 90 days. However the team caution that further research
is still needed into the long term effectiveness of the treatment.
