Parasomnias
Disruptive Sleep Disorders
The word parasomnia is a general term for any disruptive sleep
disturbance caused by abnormal brain activity. Note that the term "abnormal" does not necessarily
mean anything drastic. Very few people are totally normal!
Parasomnias often result
in some form of physical activity during sleep. This distinguishes
them from dysomnias which make it difficult to get to sleep or remain asleep.
Parasomnias are thought to occur when something goes wrong with the usual
sleep cycle. Such interrupted sleep patterns can be
temporary or long term.
Many parasomnias are inconvenient and embarrassing without necessarily being
harmful. If you are at all concerned by any possible parasomnia, please consult your
doctor.
