Technology Promises Soundproof Bedrooms
External noise can be a major source of sleep deprivation in our modern society, especially in densely populated urban regions. Up until now the best that technology could do to combat this was to mask it using a sleep sound machine. However the future may be blessedly free of unwanted nighttime noise.
Research published in the New Journal of Physics (NJP) suggests that it may one day be possible to build a "cloak of silence". New materials could be produced using "sonic crystals" that bend sound waves around them rather than allowing them to pass through. A room walled with such material would have inherent soundproofing properties.
The idea is still in a very early stage, the materials don't actually exist yet. So for the time being we'll just have to continue hiding our heads under the pillows or buying yet more nature sound CDs.
