Childhood Snoring Linked to Attention and Hyperactivity Disorders

Journal SLEEP reports on new research that strengthens the link between snoring in children and possible Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD).

The research was carried out by the University of Michigan and is a follow up to a study undertaken by the same university four years earlier. The new research confirms that snoring appears to be a good predictor of later hyperactivity and inattentiveness.

Dr. Ronald D. Chervin said: "The association is pretty strong, and we are saying it may be causal" and "The sleep disruption itself may lead to hyperactivity."

Exactly how snoring leads to hyperactivity is not yet clear. One theory is that snoring and sleep apnea reduce oxygen levels and that this then affects behaviour.
