A term you're likely to come across when shopping for pillows is throw pillow (or, occasionally, "pillow throw"). These have a lot in common with pillow shams and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

What Is A Throw Pillow?

A throw pillow is a small pillow designed mainly for decorative rather than functional use. The pillow can be "thrown" (or, more usually, carefully placed) on any piece of furniture. Throw pillows aren't restricted to beds and bedrooms but are commonly used as decorative accents in sitting rooms where they are placed on chairs and couches. Here in the UK a throw cushion used with seating is usually simply described as a cushion.

The most common shape for a throw pillow is a small square, however other shapes are also used. In particular the cylindrical shaped bolster cushion is sometimes used to provide seated back support.

Although throw pillows are sometimes used to provide comfort when seating - for example resting the head - this isn't their primary purpose and they're usually designed for appearance rather than comfort. Decorative extras such as buttons and knotwork can make some throw pillows most uncomfortable.

For an interior design perspective throw pillows provide a good way to break up a block of colour (eg the sofa) and provide a contrasting accent. A throw pillow set is also a simple and inexpensive way of changing the mood of a room and can also be used to enhance a particular theme.
