Bedroom Themes

The idea of a themed bedroom with matching furniture, walls, linen etc is especially popular with children. However there's no reason that adults shouldn't have a co-ordinated look to their bedroom as well. Decorating and interior design give a great opportunity to exercise your creativity and express your personality.

Kids

Many kids love a theme to their rooms. Popular themes include:

  • Animals / Jungle / Nature
  • Cowboys
  • Fairies / fairy tales / Princesses
  • Dinosaurs / Dragons / etc
  • Space / Stars
  • Sports
As far as practical, let the child have a say on deciding the bedroom theme. Not only will they prefer the end result that way but it gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility.

One thing to remember is that children's tastes change rapidly. A child who loves - for example - Barbie dolls today might find them totally "uncool" next year. So if you've spent a lot of money on Barbie wallpaper then this might cause a problem.

For this reason, you might like to consider implementing a more general theme ("science fiction") rather than a specific one ("today's coolest robot"). Another idea is to buy more temporary furnishings - posters, bedding etc. So for example you might like to consider fairy bedding and accessories instead of fairy wallpaper.

Another trap to be wary of is going too far. There are so many themed items you can buy that a visit to the store can be overwhelming. If you buy too much then the bedroom itself might become overwhelming - and have a very high price tag! Be selective.

Adults

There's absolutely no reason why an adult shouldn't have a bedroom themed in the same way as a child, many do. However most adults prefer a subtler approach.

Adult themes tend to be more general or abstract, for example Zen, "Peaceful nature", "Old fashioned elegance" or "Orange energy" (maybe not the best choice for a good night's sleep!).

At the other extreme, a gothic theme can add interest to a bedroom.

Adult tastes don't usually change as rapidly as those of children, but they do change. In addition you have to consider whether or not your zebra striped walls will appeal to a potential buyer when you come to sell your house. For this reason you should think carefully before committing yourself to anything too bold and permament.

As with kids' rooms, avoid the trap of going too far.

It's also useful to consider buying furniture and accessories that can serve dual purposes. If more likely "when" - you change your bedroom theme later you might still be able to use them elsewhere in the house.
