Moroccan Bedrooms
The term Moroccan bedroom is rarely used with geographic precision. It tends to
refer to any desert/Aladdin fantasy theme. It conjures up romantic images of deserts, caravans and
Bedouin tents. That's the traditional version - the more modern Moroccan bedroom has
similar warmth but with less of the trappings.
Ideas
Two things sum up the "Morocco" look for me: warm colours and - for the traditional,
romantic style - exotic fabrics both for the bedding and elsewhere in the room.
The colours tend to be warm and spicy. Saffron, orange, brick red, all these hues work
well for an African feel. Other people prefer to go for blues, suggesting the open desert
sky. Whichever you choose you might well want to add at least a splash of contrast
somewhere in the decor. Too much of even the best thing can be overpowering.
For the traditional "fantasy" theme I think fabrics are a must - lush, silken drapes
in appropriate colours. Cushions, pillows and rugs complement canopies and hangings.
For the more modern look geometric patterns and furniture seem to work. And, of
course, there's no reason you shouldn't use both where appropriate.
Some people like to buy candles to add to the authentic atmosphere. Whilst I like this idea
in theory I'm very safety conscious. The idea of naked flames in the bedroom, especially
one with lots of fabric, is not something I'd want. So you might want to consider buying
Moroccan style artificial lighting that is designed to be safe.
Smell is a powerful sense often overlooked and can really add to the atmosphere. Again,
some people like to buy scented candles but I'd rather use a scent dispenser without
flame.
As with all bedroom themes, be careful not to get carried away and go over the top. A
little excess can work well with a Moroccan fantasy, but don't take it too far!
