Memory Foam Footwear
Memory foam, originally devised for the NASA space programme, has now come well and truly
down to earth. Not only can you sleep on it and sit on it, you can even walk on it!
Shoes and Slippers
The application of visco-elastic foam to footwear is not a surprise. It was previously
impractical due to cost, however the price of memory foam has become much more affordable
in recent years. As a result you can now buy shoes, slippers, etc with built in memory
foam cushioning.
Memory foam provides a combination of both support and comfort. It moulds itself to the
contours of your feet. This can help to provide extra comfort whilst also supporting the
foot. As always, if you have a medical condition then consult your doctor first.
Inserts
There are only a limited number of memory foam shoes and slippers on the market today. An
alternative is to add an insert - also known as insoles - to your favourite normal footwear.
Inserts are cheaper than buying a new pair of shoes!
For those who really like to "push the envelope" on footwear, it's even possible to buy
memory foam inserts that also contain magnets.
When using inserts, be aware that they take up space and will make your footwear a little
tighter. If your shoes are already tight then an insert of any sort might feel comfortable
at first but actually result in pain and discomfort later.
