Latex Mattress FAQ
Answers to some frequently asked questions about latex rubber used in
bedding such as mattresses, pillows, etc.
|
- What Is Latex?
Natural latex foam is created from the sap of the rubber tree plant. Today you can also buy synthetic latex which is usually created from petrochemicals.
- What Does The Word Latex Mean?
The word latex comes from the Latin lac meaning milk (as in lactose etc). This is
probably a reference to the milky sap of the rubber tree.
- What Is Talalay Latex?
- What Is Dunlop Latex?
Dunlop and Talalay are not different types of latex, the names refer to different manufactuing
processes. Dunlop is the older process, Talalay more recent. Neither is necessarily better than the
other, however Talalay tends to be softer and Dunlop more durable.
- Is Latex Environmentally Friendly?
Natural latex is biodegradable, however you might want to check if it comes from an ethical and
sustainable source.
Synthetic latex is more complex, ask your supplier for details.
- Why Are There Holes in a Latex Mattress?
In its pure form latex is a very dense material. A mattress made from solid latex would be very
uncomfortable. The holes soften the mattress - the more holes the softer it is.
- Which Is Better, Latex or Memory Foam?
That depends! Check out my memory foam vs latex review. If at all
possible then shop around and try before you buy. The best solution for one person may not work for another.
