Dust Mite Control

Dust mites are a tenacious and hardy pest. They're found in just about every home, no matter how superficially clean. It's been estimated that dust mites infest at least 95% of modern American homes - bad news for those with an allergy.

Control Measures

It's almost impossible to kill dust mites off completely, let alone permanently. However you can either remove or reduce their presence from particular problem areas. You can also attack the problem from the other side and take measures to reduce the negative effects they may be causing you.

Reduction & Protection

Here are a few ideas that might help in alleviating your dust mite problem, either by reducing pest numbers or mitigating against their possible effects:

 • Frequent laundering of bedding
 • Avoid dust build up, hoover frequently
 • Reduce the humidity
 • Buy anti-allergenic bedding and anti-dust mite products
 • Use dust-proof covers for mattresses and pillows
 • Replacement of traditional carpet with other materials

Extermination

Should these basic protective methods fail you might want to try and eliminate the dust mites from at least one area of the bedroom. They'll probably come back, but periodic extermination combined with the ameliorative methods above should help to keep their growth down.

There are a number of dust mite treatment kits available to buy which claim to help in eliminating the wee beasties. These products normally take the form of sprays or powders. Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to use these products. Take special care if you have children and/or pets.

If in doubt consult a professional pest removal specialist.
